Women in India
Hello Pretty Lady!! Yes you, the “better half” of the population (48% of the population of India is Women). You started your career as your father told you. After the management degree, job is must or else how will you get a good match?
Eventually, everyone needs a hard-working free spirited woman in their office – you get the work done, you naturally can multitask and you keep the energy of office high.
You are innately competitive – other girls want to put you down and guys won’t accept defeat from you – Results are high performance from everyone. Husband needs you to focus on your career, only during initial years of the marriage, as he needs to focus on his. Once you have a child, your aspirations are redundant – you need to take up home and family responsibilities. Probably that’s what your mother told you to do? Perhaps! She did exactly the same when you were born.
Cut the umbical cord!! It’s time to break these shackles and start taking decisions yourself.
Women in India may be half of the population but only 30% of women are part of corporate leadership positions. A meagre 12% enterprises are formally run by or owned by a woman. Out of which, around two-third of them are struggling to make it big (73% of women entrepreneurs report a revenue under Rupees one million per financial year and 71% of women entrepreneurs employ five or less people.)
The reasons are obviously directed to the patriarchal society we live in, but somewhere we need to be blame ourselves too. I have listed the reasons of why women in India are so far behind in creating enterprises. These might not be true for everyone but it does indicate a majority of the portion of female subset.
1. Most of the time women are not making their own life’s decisions.
The major decision making depends on fathers, husbands or brothers, even for their own careers at time. If women don’t take control of their lives how you believe you can take decision for a company.
2.Interestingly, most women start their own businesses at a young age of 20-30 years, but they don’t think big.
The businesses are either home grown or limited to a group or physical location.
3. Women in India also tend to take up domestic responsibilities on their own head and reluctantly share it with the male counterparts in the house.
This leads to career breaks and distrust in women in general by any hiring manager. Why should a company hire you or give you an important position in the company if you are planning to leave it when your kids are born or leave your job when your husband gets a transfer?
4. There is a sub conscious fear of earning more than your partner as it might become the reason of domestic tensions to domestic split up at times.
Surprisingly, some women try to maintain the low profile in office to avoid additional responsibilities.
5.Women don’t get much help with financial or legal functions.
If you what to run your business, you need to learn a lot of corporate finance and law.
Overall, modern women in India need to override these natural obstacles.
Once they come out to become more entrepreneurial they can definitely create millions of other jobs for more women.
The good news is that, data is getting better with each passing year. We hope more women can join the entrepreneurial journey continue shining in their careers.
