There is no denying that the food scene in India and the world is on an all-time high making it a very exciting space to be in. With the advent of smartphones, we’re bringing the ‘smart’ trend into almost every walk of our life. There is nothing we can do about it.

We have so many cooking-enthusiasts on social media, sharing new recipes either on blogs or in a YouTube video or through apps on your smart phone. (I have one too!) And if you don’t feel like fixing yourself something, you could always order in!

Browse through the menu online and place the order down to specifications like ‘low salt’ ‘extra chilly’. Moreover, the app lets you track the status of your order until it reaches your doorstep. All you need to do next is say ‘thank you’ to the delivery boy while accepting your order. You can even make use of smart speakers to order your groceries directly from whole food stores.

From simple smartphone apps like these to Bluetooth enabled cutlery and Wi-Fi enabled coffee makers – there is no denying that the dependence on technology is slowly and steadily creeping into our kitchen as well.

But these are just little conveniences when you think of the larger picture. The integration of food and technology can be used to solve many problems to provide the best of nourishment and food for citizens of the world. This is something that excites me!

Wouldn’t you feel intrigued when you hear about talks of building an electric bioreactor which can literally produce ‘food’ out of thin air?

The cup sized bioreactor is said to use carbon dioxide, electricity, water and microbes to create a product that is 50% protein, 25 % carbohydrates and the rest of it is made up of fats and nucleic acid. The created product is dried and turned into a powder form which provides you with the above-mentioned nutrients. While this is not technically food, it is full of the nourishment that we get from eating regular food, probably even more.

Virtual Reality or ‘VR’ has also been in the tech-talk for a while now. Using a VR headset, Virtual Reality transcends you to an artificial world. Developers are using VR to give a first-person experience of the ambience of restaurants or exotic locales to tempt people.

Similarly, AR or Augmented Reality is proving to be very beneficial in the food business too. We already have brands that let us experience the presence of a specific appliance or fixtures in our homes using AR. This helps in understanding the space that will be necessary for those appliances and being ready beforehand. Moreover, developers in AR are creating AR impressions of how a dish online might appear in reality by simply using your phone and scanning it on to a surface. This gives it a somewhat realistic perspective using 3D images. This gives a realistic perspective on the quantity and presentability of a dish to keep foodies hooked.

Super-smart kitchen table tops

Augmented reality when used in a device called a smart kitchen table top can further simplify your everyday cooking.

All you have to do is place ingredients on the smart board. In a matter of seconds a screen will display an assortment of appropriate recipes and guides through the entire process of making it, on real time basis. This is done with the help of a camera fitted above the table. The table uses a smart light projection that brings to life whatever is placed on it. This table top has an induction plate fitted in one section. In other section there are inbuilt scales to measure and quantify ingredients and sensor controlled panels. You can pretty much build all you kitchen activity around this smart table top.

Technologies like these are definitely revolutionary. There is still a long way to go before we are ready to be in the ‘Jetson’ age. But we’re en route for sure.
